About Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas - the only gaseous member of the uranium radioactive decay chain. As a gas, radon works its way to the surface of the earth and either escapes into the atmosphere or finds its way into buildings.  Radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.  Research has shown that exposure to radon gas increases your risk of developing lung cancer.  Radon gas is considered the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. EPA estimates that 22,000 people die annually as the result of radon-induced lung cancer.  According to the BIER V report, radon accounts for 55% of your annual exposure to radioactivity.  This is exposure to a carcinogen that you can control.

In Southern Illinois, don't be lulled into complacency because of the Zone 2 rating.  That only means that elevated indoor radon levels are considered by EPA to occur with less frequency.  There is no proof that is true.  The only way to know if your house has elevated radon levels is to test for radon.

It is recommended that you test the footprint of your home.  That means in a room over each foundation type.  If your home is over a basement, test the basement.  If your home is over a slab-on-grade or crawlspace, test in rooms that you use frequently, such as the living room, family room, or bedrooms. If your home is over a combination of these foundation types, test in commonly used rooms over each foundation type.
